Diamond: John and Audrey Brooks

GRANDPARENTS John and Audrey Brookes, aged 84 and 82, have celebrated their diamond wed-ding anniversary.

The Beckenham couple were married at their local Church, St Pauls, during the Second World War, on January 25, while John was on leave from a posting in Northern Ireland.

Their friendship blossomed after John bumped into Audrey at Sydenham Station on the way back from work at the Air Min-istry in central London. They had previously met at a friends party.

John, of Allen Road, who later served as a field telephonist, in the mobile signals unit, in transport command, in northern Germany, said: "After the war I be-came a full time career civil servant at the civil service commission.

"We had three children, who Audrey brought up, and now we've got ten grand-children as well."

The couple used to travel a lot by car in Spain and Portugal, but with old age have opted to enjoy gardening and grandchildren.

They celebrated their wedding anniversary with family and friends at Addington Village Inn, in Old Addington Village, Croydon.

Johns top tip for a long marriage is to live a long time.
