MIDDLESBROUGH transfer target Bernard Mendy is set to rebuff the Teessiders' advances by signing a new contract at Paris Saint Germain.

The Frenchman was one of a number of right-backs being tracked by Boro boss Steve McClaren as he looks to bolster his squad ahead of next season's maiden UEFA Cup campaign.

The 22-year-old spent ten months on loan at Bolton Wanderers two seasons ago after struggling to make a mark in his homeland.

And McClaren was keen to bring him back to England, with Danny Mills unlikely to return to the Riverside and Mario Melchiot still weighing up his options after being told he has no future at Chelsea. But Mendy has hinted that he will be going nowhere after helping Paris Saint Germain to lift the French Cup last season.

The youngster's form saw him voted the best right-back in Le Championnat and also saw him break into Jacques Santini's French team to win his first international cap.

McClaren remains hopeful of persuading Melchiot to move to Middlesbrough, but the Dutchman has repeatedly stressed that he will not be rushed after a host of clubs expressed a tentative interest in signing him.
