Michael Carrick isn't only preparing for the return of Championship football in December, he is also getting ready for a fitness challenge.

The Middlesbrough head coach will be running 5k every day next month as part of an annual fundraising effort for the Michael Carrick foundation.

It's the fourth year of the festive challenge which will raise vital funds for the foundation, which supports under-privileged children in the North-East and Manchester.

Carrick has already been out putting the graft in on the roads around Boro's Rockliffe training base - and he's urging supporters to play their part by joining in with the fundraiser.

The Boro boss took to social media in one video as he gave details of the challenge and encouraged others to get involved.

"I was a bit out of breath doing that video, it was the first take mind," smiled Carrick.
Explaining the work of his foundation, Carrick said: "This is the fourth year we've done 5k a day. Whether it's a run, walk, cycle, swim, it's proved to be hugely popular. I do it myself and really enjoy it.

"I started my foundation five years ago when I had my testimonial. I'm really passionate about giving young people a chance in life and helping under-privileged children in and around Manchester and the North-East.

"I'm trying to work closely with the club and foundation here to help local communities and children.

"It's similar to football, I think everyone deserves a chance. Some children don't have as many opportunities as others, it's something I'm really passionate about. We're spreading the word, any support would be greatly appreciated."

The build-up has been tough for Carrick as he works on his fitness but has also given the head coach chance to "clear his mind" as he gets to grips with management.

He said: "I've just started up again (running) and it did make me think I need to get myself in gear.

"It's something I enjoy doing, I enjoy it for my mind and wellbeing, being out in the fresh air clears your mind, it makes me feel a lot better about myself. It's important to look after yourself."

Carrick enjoys keeping fit but during training there's never any temptation to join in with Boro's players.

He said: "Them days are gone. For me when you finish you finish, I'm not one of them who is hanging on.

"I'm not fussed about playing anymore, I had my time and loved it, but my body tells me it's had enough. I'm more on the other side now and trying to help the boys in other ways."
