As a journalist and now club author for Middlesbrough, Anthony Vickers has worked with words for decades - but his latest Boro book is all about pictures.

Shot! is a collection of iconic and never-seen-before Boro images, brought together as one.

There's delight and agony in the stands and in the dressing room. There's Aitor, Agnew, Woodgate, Warnock and Wilder. There's Cardiff and Europe, the Championship and the Premier League. There's Juninho, Ravanelli, Maccarone flying through the air and George Friend leaping with delight.

"It took months to settle on the pictures I wanted to use," says Anthony.

"When I started at the club, one of the things I was given access to was the photo archive and whenever I had a quiet moment I'd just randomly pick a year and look through.

"We all know the iconic pictures but there were hundreds and hundreds of pictures that have never been used, that I'd never seen and some are absolutely amazing. I dug through them all, ended up with a pile of about 500 on my desk and then I set about picking the ones I'd use."

He adds: "As a journalist we concentrate on the words but over the years I've seen some absolutely fantastic pictures and sometimes you almost don't need to write the words to go with them.

"It's true that pictures do paint a thousand words but they also open portals to memories and emotions and it can take you back.

"In this book, I've used a lot of iconic pictures - Massimo, Juninho - but what I like best are the fan photos. While the focus might be on a player or a goal, in the background there are a thousand stories - grimaces of angst, the joy, complete strangers hugging each other. That really takes you back into the moment. I've spent hours getting lost in the photographs."
