Tributes left to Cameron Stewart killed in Newton Aycliffe bike crash

Cameron Stewart has been named locally and on social media as the 23-year-old motorcyclist who died in a crash with a car on Williamfield Way in Newton Aycliffe on Tuesday (June 3) evening.

Despite the efforts of paramedics including the air ambulance he was pronounced dead at the scene. Tributes have been laid there in his memory today (June 4).

It happened at about 5.55pm, at about the same time a memorial event was taking place for Wayne Hodgson, from Newton Aycliffe, on what would have been his 19th birthday.

Wayne Hodgson. (Image: Durham Constabulary) Wayne and 13-year-old pal Bobby Grimes, also from Aycliffe, died in a crash at nearby Rushyford on July 5 last year when their motorbike was hit by a car after swerving into oncoming traffic.

An inquest into their deaths heard neither were wearing a helmet when Wayne, who was driving while disqualified and intoxicated on a lethal amount of pregabalin, clipped the side of a car and went into the path of an Audi. The coroner concluded Wayne died of misadventure and ruled Bobby’s death as an accident.

Bobby Grimes. (Image: Durham Constabulary) Anyone attending the memorial event on a motorbike on Tuesday was asked on social media to wear a helmet.

Video of the memorial event seen by the Echo shows several people on motorbikes on what appears to be Williamfield Way, with balloons and smoke flares being let off in Wayne's memory.

Dozens of people gathered on the corner of Williamfield Way and Kirkstone Place today (Wednesday, April 4) to pay their respects to 23-year-old Cameron.

A woman was arrested in connection with Cameron’s death and remains in police custody at this time.

Detectives are investigating and locals can expect to see an increased police presence over the coming days, Durham Constabulary said.

A force spokesperson added: “Investigators would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the collision, or who has dashcam footage of the vehicles prior to the incident.

“Anyone with information should contact the Serious Collision Investigation Unit by emailing sciu@durham.police.uk, or by calling 101, quoting incident number 361 of June 3. Information can also be submitted to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called to a road traffic incident last night (3 June) on Kirkstone Place in Newton Aycliffe at 5.49pm.

"We dispatched two ambulance crews, one clinical team leader and were supported by our colleagues at Great North Air Ambulance Service."

The air ambulance said its helicopter with a doctor and two paramedics on board arrived at the scene in 11 minutes.
