Jurors in the inquest into the death of a 19-year-old hit by a police car have been sent out to consider their findings.

The hearing to determine the circumstances surrounding the death of Kelvin Bainbridge, who died at the scene in Middlestone Moor, Spennymoor, on October 2019, is being held at Crook Coroners’ Court.

The jury has been told the father-of-one died after jumping from his vehicle during a pursuit.

During the inquests jurors were told his mother screamed at him to slow down moments before he was killed.

The disqualified driver was wanted by police and had just visited a hospital with his pregnant partner to find out their unborn child was a boy when he sped away from a marked traffic vehicle.

Following a pursuit which lasted six minutes, Mr Bainbridge got out of the Nissan Primera he was driving and was struck by the Durham Police vehicle in Spennymoor at about 2.30pm.

The inquest was told the cause of death was the blunt head injury Mr Bainbridge suffered when he was struck while he was on the ground.
