A County Durham jazz band has tasted success at the biggest competition of the year.

Northern Citrines, based in Shildon, enjoyed a stellar day at the 49th annual United Kingdom Federation of Jazz Bands (UKFJB) world championships in Doncaster.

The Northern Citrines did exceptionally well at this event and were crowned this year's Division Two world champions.

The jazz band has been aiming to win the title ever since it was established in 2002 by Janice, Scott and Nicola Wheatley, together with a host of committee members and volunteers.

Sadly, Janice passed away last year so did not get to celebrate the long-awaited win.

However, the band were able to donate a trophy in her memory won by a Welsh band named Blue Phoenix for their outstanding drumming.

Northern Citrines were also placed in several different categories, including drum major, lead kazoo, best music, best display band, overall band of the day, best entertainment, multi-tenors, lead drummer, tenor drummer, mini mascot and baton.

The success follows a win for the Shildon Jubilees jazz band at the UK main event competition.
