A LORRY driver whose vehicle exploded on the A19 on Monday remains in hospital being treated for burns to his hands, face and neck.

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward after the HGV collided with a barrier near Hilton, Yarm.

The cab then exploded, engulfing both itself and the trailer in flames, at about 4.45pm on the A19 southbound, close to the Hilton overbridge.

The 47-year-old male driver is currently receiving treatment at James Cook University Hospital.

One lane of the A19 remained closed on Tuesday for repairs to be carried out to a bridge damaged in the incident. It has since reopened.

  • Any witnesses who have not already spoken to police and anyone who may have dashcam footage are asked to contact PC Ian Stapley from the Cleveland and Durham Specialist Operations Unit on the non-emergency number 101, quoting event number 11908.
