PART of the A19 is closed this evening due to a major lorry fire.

The road is closed southband at the A174 Parkway, and motorists are reporting long delays.

The northbound carriageway of the A19 is now open

The driver has been taken to hospital with burns, however, his injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

Disruption is expected to last for the next few hours.

A spokesperson for Cleveland Police said: "The northbound carriageway of the A19 is now opening following an earlier lorry fire.

"Diversions will be in place at the roundabout junction of the A174/A19 at Thornaby.

"The driver has been taken to hospital with burns, however, his injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

"The southbound carriageway remains closed at this time. Thank you to motorists for their patience.

"Please use alternative routes whilst emergency services deal with the incident."

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 4.46pm to reports of a male injured at the junction of the A174 and A19 at Thornaby.

"We dispatched two double crewed ambulances and a Hazardous Area Response Team.

"We also requested the Great North Air Ambulance however we transported one patient to James Cook University Hospital."
