AN investigation was launched by police after the body of a woman was found in a house.

Police were called to the Dorothy Street area of North Ormesby, Middlesbrough on Monday night after a member of the public reported concerns for a person inside the address.

Cleveland Police  say the incident is being treated as suspicious.

They have yet to name the victim.

A spokesman said: "We appreciate people in the neighbourhood will be concerned and we would reassure them that a man and a woman have been arrested and are in police custody.

"We do not currently believe there is any wider risk to the public.

"A cordon has been put in place and we appreciate local residents’ co-operation at this time."

A neighbour said: "It's terrible what's happened. She was a lovely woman. I had been homeless when I first moved here and she gave me a tenner to go to McDonald's."

Cleveland Police have confirmed the man and woman arrested in connection to the incident remain in custody awaiting questioning.

A post morten examination will take place in due course.

Extra patrols remain in the area for reassurance and anyone with information is asked to contact Cleveland Police via the 101 number, quoting event 181109.
