I TOTALLY agree with the sentiment of John Cumberland’s letter headlined Tomato Test (HAS, Sept 17).

There are, however, rapid charging points that can deliver an 80 per cent charge in 30 minutes, if you’re that way inclined.

There are about 40 million vehicles on the roads of Great Britain, 40 per cent of which are diesel.

I understand that the biggest part of a vehicle’s carbon footprint is at scrappage.

There are pollutants such as battery acid, brake fluid, antifreeze, refrigerants and oil to dispose of, then you are left with a pile of metal and rubber to dispose of or recycle.

Recycling comes with its own energy costs. So if the Government want to scrap 40 per cent of 40 million vehicles in GB and replace them with new ones, indeed John Cumberland, the “world would grind to a halt with immediate effect”.
