POLICE officers from North Yorkshire have received awards for bravery at York Minster.

Two members of the York Minster Police Team and six officers from North Yorkshire Police received awards at a ceremony held in the Minster’s ancient Chapter House.

The Royal Humane Society national award for bravery was presented to Cathedral Constable Adam Rickers, Police Sergeant Robert Batchelor, Police Sergeant Sarah Davies, PC Ross Garside, Detective Inspector Carol Kirk, PC Lee Ward, and retired Police Sergeant David Willey.

In September 2018, the officers worked together to calm, and then bring to safety, a distressed man who had climbed more than 250 feet up the scaffolding on York Minster.

An award for Commendable Performance was made to Cathedral Constable Roshan Tamang for his bravery in confronting a man armed with a knife in Dean’s Park in January 2019. Roshan kept the situation calm and controlled, warning members of the public to keep clear until he was able to alert police in a nearby police van.
