A great way to cool down during a heatwave while keeping the whole family entertained could be by visiting a “first class” waterside park.
The Derwent Waterside Park can be found only a 33-minute drive away from Durham and offers families plenty of activities to get involved in.
Even if you don’t fancy taking part in some water sports, there are still lots of things to see and do around the reservoir.
The park does not allow visitors to enter the water unauthorised for any swimming or water sports so it is important to pre-book any activities you might want to try out.

The Derwent Sailing Club offers supervised sailing, windsurfing and open water swimming for those who want to cool down.
You could also try out some fishing, which is a great activity that the whole family can get involved in.
If you love nature, you can take in the “stunning views” by taking a slow walk around the reservoir or by following the nature trail to spot the local wildlife.
In terms of food, you are welcome to bring a picnic and sit somewhere to eat and take in the “breath-taking location”.
You might prefer to spot by the park’s café where you can find sandwiches, snacks, and ice creams and then pop into the shop to browse the homeware, gifts, and toys available to remember your trip by.
