A violent thug left his partner covered in blood when he attacked her with a perfume bottle on the Amsterdam ferry, a court heard.
Darlington's John Jackson launched the attack on the woman after she fell asleep in their cabin following a furious row about his drinking.
The brute hit her over the head with the stiletto-shaped perfume bottle and grabbed her by the throat after downing copious amounts of booze while on the ferry in April.
The 41-year-old also repeatedly punched the woman when he was driving home from a night out in Sunderland in July.
Teesside Crown Court heard how the victim called her son to warn him that she needed to get into their home quickly when they arrived so she could seek sanctuary from Jackson.
Leading with the incident on the ferry, Paul Rooney, prosecuting, said: “She felt an excruciating pain, she checked her head and found it was bleeding. She turned and saw the defendant had a bottle of perfume in his hand – it is in the shape of a stiletto.
“She got up and went into the shower with blood from her head and managed to stem the bleeding.”
Turning his attention to the trip to Sunderland, Mr Rooney added: “While he was driving, he hit her about 20-30 times during the journey back from Sunderland to Darlington.
“He then became verbally abusive, he made threats that he was going to kill her, kill her children and burn her house down.”
Jackson, Thomas Court, Darlington, pleaded guilty to intentional strangulation, two charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, common assault and making threats to kill.
Sophie Allinson-Howells, mitigating, said the property maintenance company owner acknowledges his former partner’s version of events.
She added: “He acknowledges that this is an abhorrent series of offending against a woman he was in a relationship with.

“He acknowledges he has let himself down but that pales in comparison to the harm he has caused during their relatively short relationship.”
Recorder David Gordon sentenced Jackson to a total of three years in custody for all offences.
He said: “Clearly, your offending has had a profound effect on her physical wellbeing and on her psychological wellbeing.
Jackson was also made subject to a ten-year restraining order to protect his victim.
