A second driver involved in a serious injury collision on a country road has yet to be interviewed by the police having spent a long time in hospital recovering.
More than two years since the incident, one of the drivers involved in the accident is awaiting trial, but it is unclear if the second driver will also face prosecution.
Cameron Shires was arrested at the scene of the two-vehicle crash on the B6282, in Teesdale, County Durham, on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
Several emergency service vehicles attended the scene, near Burn Bridge and Bogg House Farm, between Middleton-in-Teesdale and Eggleston, shortly after 4.30pm on Sunday, April 16, 2023.
Two casualties from one of the cars involved, the driver and passenger from a Vauxhall Corsa, were described as being, “seriously ill” and were air-lifted to hospital for life-saving treatment.
A third casualty, the passenger in a Seat Ibiza, who was also seriously injured, was taken by ambulance to hospital.
Durham Police appealed for information from witnesses and other motorists in the area at the time, as part of the investigation into the cause of the collision.
The defendant, then aged 18, now 20, of Yarm Road, Darlington, was charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving in a Honda Civic on the B6277 and the B6282.
He denied the charge at a hearing at the court last year, when the judge was told he denies he was racing at the time.
Asked by Judge Richard Clews what the situation is now, Dr Chris Wood, prosecuting, said the Corsa driver, who was seriously injured but has since made something of a recovery, is yet to be interviewed by police about the incident.
Dr Wood said medical assessment has been made to see if the casualty is fit enough to undergo a police interview, “or participate in the court process”.
He said a doctor’s completed report should be submitted within a few days.

Judge Clews adjourned the hearing until May 22 for all parties to “take stock” following consideration of the medical report findings.
The defendant remains on bail.
