Heavy flooding in Durham as work continues to clear street

Sadler Street in central Durham saw heavy flooding today (Friday, March 14) as work continues to clear the street.

According to a spokesperson for Northumbrian Water, teams have been "working hard following a burst on a water main on Saddler Street in central Durham" since approximately 7am, today.

A "complex re-zoning operation" helped restore all water supplies, but the area remains affected by flooding and standing water.

The burst was quickly isolated, and efforts are now being focused on clearing the affected area.

A spokesperson for Northumbrian Water said: “The road has been closed to vehicles to allow us to do this safely and so we can carry out our repairs, however the path will be reopened to pedestrians within the next few hours."

A spokesperson for Northumbrian Water continued: “We have been working closely with the local authorities and also have been offering support to local businesses who have been impacted by the flooding.

“We know how devastating flooding can be, and we apologise for any inconvenience caused. We would like to thank customers for their patience."
