Final touches are being made as a new hotel prepares to open alongside the Roadchef motorway services operator’s Durham site, off junction 61 of the A1(M), at Bowburn.

The 38-room Super 8 by Wyndham Durham Hotel formally opens to the public tomorrow (Thursday May 23).

It will be the second in the global chain’s UK Super 8 hotels after a similar development at the Chester East Roadchef services.

The hotel offers a range of rooms for motorway travellers seeking a stop-off close to Durham, from express rooms for two, affordable family rooms or a luxury apartment, with prices starting at £48.

It has free parking included in the stay, and also offers on-site dining and a range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.

Guests can expect free superfast Wi-Fi, connected tv streaming, air conditioning and electric vehicle charging, which can be pre-booked to guarantee a space, from £15.

The hotel is pet-friendly with a small extra charge for furry guests of all sizes in dog-friendly rooms.

It is said to be fully signed up to the Wyndham Hotel range’s Green Certificate programme.

Guests can expect minimal single-plastic use at the hotel, on-site wildlife-friendly habitats as well as the electric-vehicle charging points.

The hotel, described as equidistant between Darlington and Sunderland, boasts of its proximity to the ancient city of Durham, with its World Heritage site landmarks of the cathedral and castle and is bound to be busy at graduation time for the city’s university.

Durham Services, at the A1(M) junction with the A177, close to the villages of Bowburn and Coxhoe, was opened in 1994 by the late broadcasting botanist Dr David Bellamy, Durham University lecturer, author and well-known environmental campaigner.

It opened a McDonald’s drive-thru, the first on the UK motorway network, in 2019, creating 20 jobs, and it went on to win Roadchef awards as the best site in its motorway network, the following year.
