suspected burglar who attempted to evade arrest by hiding in a bush was swiftly detained with the help of a police dog.

Officers received a report at around 4.50am today (Wednesday) of suspicious activity at a property on Fleetwood Way in Felling, Gateshead.

It was later reported that an alleged burglary was in progress with the offender believed to have gained entry to the property through a window.

A  Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "The suspect attempted to flee the scene upon the arrival of officers but was quickly located while trying to stay hidden in a bush on nearby Sunderland Road by PD Claude.

"The male – aged 28 – was arrested on suspicion of burglary of a residential property within 30 minutes of the report being received. He remains in police custody."

Detective Sergeant Stuart Taylor, of Northumbria Police, said: “This was a great result and another fine example of the work our frontline teams deliver for communities every day.

“Burglary is an invasive crime which sadly leaves victims feeling unsafe in their own homes, and I am pleased we have been able to make a quick arrest in this case.”

He added: “We would like to take this opportunity to remind residents and businesses across our communities of the extra steps that can be taken to deter opportunistic burglars and thieves.

“Criminals will often go from street to street, looking to find any door handles or windows which are unlocked.
