Three cars were destroyed and several other vehicles were significantly damaged after a fire 'in the open' at an industrial unit.

Emergency services were called to Station Road in Brompton, near Northallerton, at about 10.10pm on Saturday (March 30), following reports of a fire at an industrial unit. 

According to North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, the fire began at an industrial compound containing five cars.

In total, three cars were destroyed at the unit, with a further three sustaining damage.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Crews from Northallerton and Thirsk responded to a report of a fire seen in the open.

"On arrival crews found this to be a fire within a commercial compound involving five vehicles.

"Crews extinguished the fire and dampened the area down using one breathing apparatus and an extended hose reel jet.

"Three vehicles suffered 100 per cent fire damage, three vehicles suffered 50 per cent fire damage and a further three vehicles suffered heat and smoke damage."
