The Met Office are predicting heavy rain today with snow on the highest ground.

In Darlington, the heavy rain isn't expected to come 1pm but it will last most of the afternoon.

They are predicting a cold start to the day and after climbing to 6C at 12 noon it is expected to drop again in the early afternoon.

By late afternoon the rain should have eased up and it will be an overcast evening.

There will be highs of 6C and lows of 2C, with the sun due to set at 17:43pm.

A Met Office spokesperson said: "A cold and frosty start with patches of mist and fog clearing as a band of strong winds, rain and hill snow arrives by the afternoon.

"Snow likely to be confined to high ground. Some sharp showers following in behind. Maximum temperature 7 °C.

"Rain and hill snow lingering in the north of the region, elsehwere some showers continuing through the night. Winds easing, but remaining cloudy with frost developing by dawn."
