A takeaway has been hit with a two-star hygiene rating after inspectors found issues with ‘cleanliness’ and ‘dirty’ fridge.

Middlesbrough Council has given the The Grill House in Nunthorpe a rating of ‘Improvement Necessary.’

The council have released the full report following the inspection – which found works need to be undertaken to improve the cleanliness of the structure of the premises, and recommended action to pest-proof the business.

It found “dirty sponges” were being used as cleaning equipment, while “high risk food” such as garlic sauce had been kept at room temperature – risking bacterial growth.

The report said: “During the visit high risk food (garlic sauce) was being stored at room temperature, presenting a risk of bacterial growth that could lead to food poisoning. These foods must be kept at or below 8°C

“Dirty sponges were being used for cleaning equipment and utensils, presenting a risk of contamination. Sponges must be kept clean, and be replaced regularly.

It was evident that improvements need to be made, particularly to the cleanliness of the structure of the premises.

“It is also essential that remedial works are taken to ensure the premises is suitably pest proofed.”
