Plans have been submitted to Durham County Council to build up to 20 homes with associated access, car parking, landscaping, engineering and infrastructure, at land to the east of Ashfield Drive, Durham Road, Willington.

The overall development site at land east of Ash Drive is a roughly rectangular shaped parcel of land which extends to approximately 8.1ha and comprises a single agricultural field.

The northern boundary is adjacent to a recently constructed petrol filling station and convenience store.

Residential properties bound the site to the west, with the main built-up settlement of Willington beyond.

Agricultural fields and open countryside lie to all other sides to the east and the south.

The properties will be a mix of one, two, and three-bedroom dwellings. The properties will include short terraces, semi-detached and detached houses predominantly two storeys in height, with some single storey and some 2.5 storeys in height.

It is proposed to provide three affordable dwellings on-site which would represent a 15 per cent affordable housing provision as part of the scheme. The affordable housing is all proposed to be two-bedroom dwellings.

According to a planning statement prepared on behalf of the applicant: "The nature of the scale of the development and its distinctive arrangement of dwellings ensures a legible, safe and convenient layout and environment for residents and visitors.

"The design provides a cohesive development whilst the streets have individual and differing characters of their own.

"Feature buildings provide focal points and vista stops at key junctions within the development.

"All dwellings face onto the street with the articulation of corners achieved by the use of distinctive materials and dual aspect units, ensuring all elevations make a positive contribution to the public realm and junctions."
