An investigation has been launched into the cause of the fire that broke out in Ashington last night.

Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service sent crews to deal with the incident at The Castle pub Woodhorn Road.

A road closure was put in place and a cordon remains there as an investigation gets underway.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly after 7pm yesterday (Monday) we received a report from the fire service of a fire at a premises on Woodhorn Road, in Ashington, Northumberland.

“Officers attended and a section of the road was closed while emergency services extinguished the fire, which was completed several hours later.

“No-one is believed to have been injured in the incident and the road is now fully re-open.

“A cordon is in place around the premises and an investigation into the cause of the fire is now underway.”

A spokesperson for Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service said last night: "Fire crews are currently attending a fire at a property on Woodhorn Road, Ashington.

"Five appliances and an aerial ladder platform are in attendance alongside other agencies.

"Please avoid the area at this time. Thank you.

"We have a second aerial ladder platform on route to the fire on Woodhorn Road.
