A County Durham petrol station has been branded 'the best in the North of England' by drivers after offering petrol for as cheap as 136.7p - and consistently having low prices.

Throughout the cost of living crisis, people are trying to save a bit of money - and finding places with cheap petrol can help keep costs low and help drivers save a bit of money.

While supermarket chains with petrol stations attached have predominately kept their fuel prices high, even during oil shortages due to the Ukraine war, independent garages managed to keep their prices low for customers.

It's no different for G.W Holmes & Sons in Etherley Moor, Bishop Auckland, which has wowed customers consistently with its prices.

On its social media account, it regularly posts updates about how cheap petrol and diesel are - with customers pledging to "never go elsewhere" as long as the prices remain cheap at G.W Holmes.

Most recently, it took to social media over the weekend to tell customers that petrol would be 136.7p and diesel would be 144.7p heading towards Christmas.

In comparison, other petrol stations around Bishop Auckland are selling petrol for close to 140p and diesel for 155p, and even 167p at certain places.

Reacting to the cheap prices from G.W Holmes, one motorist said: "Best garage in the North of England, and probably further," while another simply added: "Best garage around."

Meanwhile, Darlington MP Peter Gibson snapped a photo of the Jet garage at junction 59 on the A1 over the weekend =- asking people if the 139.9p for petrol was the cheapest in Darlington - with many people in the comments praising the Jet garage.

This news of the petrol costs comes after petrol prices are at their lowest in more than two years, the RAC has said.

A litre of unleaded petrol now costs 142.57p on average at the pumps, a price not seen since the end of October 2021.

It is around 10p a litre cheaper than in the run-up to last Christmas, but diesel prices have not fallen.

RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said the drop comes during one of the busiest times of year on the roads.

He said: “This is good news for drivers, especially as prices should continue to come down in the run-up to Christmas due to the wholesale price being significantly lower.

“While the biggest retailers haven’t announced any headline-grabbing big cuts, prices are falling steadily every day which is encouraging.

The Northern Echo:

“We just have to hope this continues in the coming days.

“If wholesale prices are reflected more fairly at the pumps, we should see the average price of petrol drop below 140p in the next week.

“While diesel isn’t at similar low point – as it averaged of 6p less than its current 150.29p in August – it’s still down from last Christmas’s dizzying prices of around 175p a litre.”
