A man is in hospital and three people have been arrested after a serious assault in Bishop Auckland.

Emergency crews were called to Princes Street in the town just after 5.30pm on Saturday (December 9) evening to reports of a serious assault.

The victim was taken to hospital at James Cook in Middlesbrough, where he remains.

Three people – two men and a woman – were arrested in connection with the incident and remain in police custody at this time.

A huge emergency service response was seen on the street on Saturday evening with officers in attendance into the night.

Local reports suggest the incident happened near the corner shop, opposite the Cables taxi office.

Detectives have launched an investigation and are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

A Durham Constabulary spokesperson said: “Anyone with any information is asked call Durham Constabulary on 101, quoting incident reference 271 of December 9.

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service added: “We were called at 17:35 to an incident on Princes Street, Bishop Auckland.

“We dispatched a double crewed ambulance and were supported by a doctor from Great North Air Ambulance. One patient was taken to James Cook Hospital.”
