A fish and chip shop has been shortlisted in the final three as the best newcomer venue in the UK at the 2024 National Fish and Chip Awards.

Ings Fish and Chips, who are based on Embleton Court in Redcar, might have not been open longer than a lot of other venues in Redcar, North Yorkshire and the North East coast, but it's now in a shortlist of three aiming to be the best newcomer venue.

After making the shortlist of 'Newcomer of the Year', the Redcar-based chippy has been assessed against a tough set of criteria to determine their level of industry knowledge, environmental and sustainability practices, employer standards and of course, their ability to produce the tastiest chip shop favourites.

The award sponsored by ADM/Frymax has this year been recognising businesses that started trading from January 1, 2022, with an intense judging process designed to encourage the maintenance of high standards and to inspire shop owners and their teams to cast their nets far and wide for their future development and success.

The chip shops that flexed the most ‘mussel’ to the panel of industry professionals and will be heading to London for the awards ceremony on February 28 at the Park Plaza Westminster.

Ings Fish Bar will be up against Mackerel Sky in Stamford Bridge and Red Cloak Fish Bar in Stonehaven.

The National Federation of Fish Friers runs the awards, and its President Andrew Crook, said: “Newcomer of the Year is such an uplifting category for the judges to evaluate, as the businesses in question put absolutely everything into building from the ground up.

"The impeccable focus, creation of strong foundations in the shape of fantastic teams and delicious menus all coming to impactful fruition in a very short space of time, and during a challenging era for the industry, is why these chippies are the best three new arrivals on the UK fish and chip scene.”

ADM/Frymax’s UK Brand & Marketing Manager Andrew Marriott added: “ADM/Frymax is proud to be sponsoring the Newcomer of the Year award.

"In 1954 Frymax was the newcomer to the industry and here we are 70 years later, demonstrating that a good quality product positioned correctly can stand the test of time.

“Also, it is worth remembering that despite the setbacks of the last few years, fish and chips is and will remain the nation’s favourite meal.

"Our three finalists have recognised the opportunities available to build thriving businesses and have overcome any problems encountered. Let us hope that they all have long and successful careers, like Frymax.”
