A renowned television chef is swapping cooking for congas to take part in a charity music night.

Si King, one half of the Hairy Bikers with Dave Myers, has agreed to put together a 'Funk 'N' Soul Sensations' band for what he says will be "a really special evening".

The event, at The Biscuit Factory in Newcastle on Saturday, December 2, is for United for Children North East - a charitable organisation which raises funds for the most vulnerable children and young people across the North East.

Si took part in the inaugural event in 2022 and when he was asked to support it again this year, he jumped at the chance.

This year the event is raising money for two charities: Bright Futures, based in South Tyneside, which supports children and young people back into education after taking time out due to their illnesses; and the Young Women's Outreach Project, a Gateshead-based organisation to help young women and mothers have the opportunity to learn new skills.

All of the proceeds from the event will be going to those two charities direct.

Although better known as a Hairy Biker, Si has had a passion for music all of his life.

"Before I did my day job in the film and television industry and before I was a Hairy Biker, I was a musician," he said.

"I've always kept my hand in because music is a way for me to relax. It's a bit more than a hobby, but fortunately something I'm extraordinarily passionate about.

"There's nothing like music and producing music with a band of like-minded people who are good at their craft, standing on a stage performing and watching people dance with smiles on their faces - there's something elemental about it and I love it."

He added: "The event will be very special. We've got some amazing musicians and some great young talent that are going to support us, a funk and soul DJ, a little bit of food - not curated by me - all of that. It promises to be a really special evening. It's just about coming to support charitable organisations across our community."

He described Funk 'N' Soul Sensation as "a collaboration between some of the best musicians in Europe, all professional musicians and all amazingly talented at what they do".

Si said: "It's the brainchild of myself and a very talented trumpet player called Ross Laing, who's a Sunderland lad. The standard of musicianship is remarkable. I'm very much looking forward to getting everybody together.

"I'm the percussionist - I play congas and bongoes. You'll see me being sweaty on stage with the band. I'm one of the musicians in the band - I just happen to be one of the Hairy Bikers as well."

Born in County Durham, Si still lives in the region with his family, he has childhood friends he still sees and he is fiercely proud of his North East roots.

"It's a privilege to live in the North East and be part of my community up here, because it's a very special place. I absolutely feel a part of it, it's in my heart and soul. I just love it.

"It's where I know, it's a culture that I understand. There's a warmth, we're a generous people and I just think it's very special. I feel part of the earth, it's a great place to keep yourself grounded and not disappear in a sea of sycophants."

He said he feels proud that he can use his high profile to take part in events like the Newcastle music night, but added: "I can't do it on my own, I need the help of my community to support it and their generosity has always astounded me.

"We're not the most affluent part of the country, but what we lack in financial clout we make up for in generosity and warmth."

United for Children North East began in 2019, with a collaboration between solicitors, barristers and local judges who work primarily within the family justice system in the North East of England.

Following tremendous success with a foodbank appeal, the charity's aim is to raise money to support projects which directly benefit young people across the region, working with agencies and charities who support those most in financial need and in crisis.

Funk 'N' Soul Sensation will be appearing at The Biscuit Factory, Newcastle, on Saturday, December 2, doors open at 7pm. Tickets are available now on Eventbrite.
