A North East actor and presenter has hit out at the felling of the Sycamore Gap tree at Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland, calling the act "senseless destruction".

Northumberland native Robson Green has expressed his devastation at the act of "vandalism" after the tree was found felled and destroyed alongside Hadrian's Wall this morning (September 28). 

The star took to social media to express his sadness at the news after he filmed both Hadrian's Wall: Walking Coast to Coast with Robson Green and Weekend Escapes at the location.

The TV legend wrote on Instagram: "Devastated. The news of the vandalism of this iconic Northumbrian landmark at Sycamore Gap has left everyone stunned and disheartened.

"This once beautiful tree, known for its sprawling branches and vibrant foliage, now bears the scars of senseless destruction.

"What was once a source of inspiration and solace has become a painful reminder of the callousness that can reside in people.

The devastation is not only limited to the physical damage inflicted upon the tree. The emotional toll on the people who cherished this natural landmark will be immeasurable.

"The tree had become a part of our identity, a symbol of our heritage and the enduring spirit of the region."

Mr Green is one of thousands of people who have spoken out in the wake of the incident, with fellow TV star and Hairy Biker Si King calling the felling "murder".

Following the discovery of the destroyed landmark, Northumbria Police quickly confirmed an investigation was launched that led to the arrest of a 16-year-old boy this afternoon in connection with the incident.

He remains in police custody at this time.
