Durham A1M reopens after lorry and car crash causes fire

Durham Police have confirmed they received a report of a two-vehicle collision on the A1(M) northbound between J61 and J62 at 5.30am today (Tuesday).

They also confirmed the crash involved a lorry and car, with car then colliding with the central reservation and caught fire.

No one is believed to have been injured in the incident.

A Durham Police spokesperson said: "Police were called to reports of a two-vehicle collision on the A1(M) northbound between J61 and J62 at 5.30am today (Tuesday).

"The incident involved a car and a lorry. Following the collision, the car then collided with the central reservation and caught fire.

"No-one was believed to be injured.

"The road was closed while the vehicles were removed and since reopened."

County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they deployed one appliance to the scene and extinguished the fire at 6:05am.

They said: "Reports of a vehicle fire on the A1M Northbound between junctions 61 and 62, came into our control room 5:30am this morning.

"One appliance from Spennymoor attended the incident.

"On arrival our crews extinguished the fire and left the scene at 6:05am.”

North East Ambulance Service confirmed they were stood down by the fire service and did not attend the scene.
