Fresh details and the first pictures have been released of a new six-part thriller coming soon to the BBC – and part of it was filmed here in the North East.

BBC bosses say the thriller, called ‘Boat Story’ promises ‘twists and turns’, ‘high-octance action sequences’, and ‘off-beat humour’.

The broadcaster has released the first pictures of its new drama series Boat Story, which saw a grounded boat and film crews appear on Redcar beach last autumn.

Boat Story features unsuspecting leads Janet and Samuel – played by Daisy Haggard and Paterson Joseph - as they discover a haul of illegal drugs found on a shipwrecked boat.

The pair can’t believe their luck as they agree to sell it and split the cash. But on their tail is a sharp suited gangster known as ‘The Tailor’ played by Tchéky Karyo who starred as Julien Baptiste in the drama of the same name.

No release date has yet been announced, but Boat Story will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, and on Amazon Freevee in the US and Germany.

A BBC spokesperson said: “At its heart, Boat Story is an action-thriller about two ordinary people whom the world has turned its back on, and whether they’re willing - or desperate enough - to do something crazy to get what they want in life.

“Pushed to the very edge, can they trust each other and get away with their lives and the money?

“Boat Story embodies twists and turns with character-driven, surprising storytelling. Off-beat humour contrasts with high-octane action sequences against the spectacular backdrop of the beautiful, windswept coastline.”

Tommy Bulfin, Commissioning Editor at the BBC, said last year: “Boat Story is a hugely entertaining and fiendishly clever thriller that I know will have the nation desperate to know what’s coming next.”
