Emergency services rescued two people trapped in their cars after a crash on the A19 last night.

Police, fire and ambulance services were called to attend the scene near Sheraton Bank at 9.20pm.

The North East Ambulance service dispatched a doctor, three paramedic ambulance crews, two hazardous area response team crews (HART) and a clinical team leader.

At the scene they attended two patients, both of which were trapped in their vehicles.

One patient has a suspected fractured pelvis and the other has a suspected broken leg.

Both patients were taken to James Cook Hospital for treatment.

A North East Ambulance spokesperson said: "We received a call at 21.18h last night (14 AUG) to reports of two cars involved in a collision on the southbound A19 near Sheraton Bank.

"We dispatched a doctor, three paramedic ambulance crews, two hazardous area response team crews (HART) and a clinical team leader.

"Working closely with police and fire service colleagues we treated two patients, both of whom had been trapped in their own vehicles.

"Both patients were taken to James Cook Hospital, one with a suspected fractured pelvis and the other with suspected broken leg."

A Durham Constabulary spokesperson said: "We were called following a serious road traffic collision on the A19 Southbound between Castle Eden and the A179 turn off near Sheraton, at around 9.20pm last night.

"The incident involved a Citroen DS3 and a Hyundai Tucson.

"The vehicles were believed to be travelling in opposite directions when they have collided during the bad weather conditions.

"Both drivers, a man and a woman, were taken to James Cook University Hospital where they remain in a critical but stable condition.

"The road was closed in both directions for several hours and reopened at around midnight."
