A teenager has been arrested after a man was found with serious injuries following a suspected stabbing in a North East city centre. 

A police cordon is in place at Newcastle Civic Centre as police investigate the incident last night (Monday, July 11).

Northumbria Police have confirmed that a man was found with serious injuries consistent with being caused by a blade. The victim remains in hospital at this time.

An 18-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and is in police custody.

Police are at the scene with a cordon in place. A blood-stained pavement can be seen outside Newcastle Civic Centre.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At 9.15pm yesterday (Monday) officers were alerted by the ambulance service to an injured man on St Mary’s Place in Newcastle city centre.

“Emergency services attended and found the man who had sustained serious, but non-life-threatening injuries consistent with having been caused by a bladed article.

"He remains in hospital at this time.

The spokesperson added: “An 18-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and remains in police custody at this time.

“An investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

"Officers remain in the area to carry out enquiries, with a cordon in place, and anyone with any concerns is asked to speak to them."

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We received a call at 9.08pm last night (Monday 10 July) to reports of a person injured on St. Mary's Place, Newcastle. We dispatched one ambulance crew and requested support from our colleagues at the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) who attended by road.

"One patient was taken to hospital for further treatment."
