An elderly man has been taken to hospital with serious injuries after a crash involving a mobility scooter and car on a North East road.

North East Ambulance Service have confirmed they received a report of a collision between a car and a mobility scooter on the A184 in West Boldon today (May 11) at 12:23pm, which left a man, 91, with serious injuries.

They deployed a specialist paramedic, clinical team leader, two double crewed ambulances, and requested support from the Great North Air Ambulance, before taking the man to Royal Victoria Infirmary by road ambulance.

Northumbria Police confirmed the man involved injured in the incident had been riding the scooter.

An NEAS spokesperson said: "We were called at 12.23 to an incident involving a car and a mobility scooter on Western Terrace in Boldon.

"We dispatched a specialist paramedic, clinical team leader, two double crewed ambulances and requested support from the Great North Air Ambulance.

"One patient was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary by road with a doctor on board."

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At 12.30pm today, we received a report of a collision between a car and a mobility scooter on the A184 in West Boldon.

“Emergency services attended and the rider of the scooter, a 91-year-old man, has been taken to hospital for treatment with serious injuries.

“A section of the road which was closed has now re-opened.”
