A North East nightclub and music venue has revealed that it will close in a statement issued on social media.

Middlesbrough Empire said it will close its doors from Monday, February 13 until Wednesday, March 15.

The temporary closure is due to the venue working with the council and police department to create a “secure and enjoyable environment.”

The statement, issued on the venue’s social media, said: “he Middlesbrough Empire will temporarily close from Monday 13th of Feb to Weds 15 March.

“The venue you will continue to work alongside Middlesbrough Council and Cleveland Police to maintain a secure and enjoyable environment for Teesside's night clubbers and gig goers.

“We look forward to seeing you we reopen our doors on Thursday 16th March, with many international names, events and dates confirmed for the year ahead.”

It comes as back in July last year police released a damning list of 34 incidents that have allegedly taken place at The Middlesbrough Empire since December 2021

There had been reports of a stabbing, women being groped, violent door staff, a bouncer using a homophobic slur, clubgoers being glassed and a man knocked unconscious.

Middlesbrough Council held a hearing on Friday, July 8 2022, to decide whether the venue’s licence should be revoked, changed or remain the same.

On Sunday, May 1 2022, a 19-year-old clubber was stabbed in the back and taken to James Cook University Hospital. Three boys, one aged 15 and two aged 16, were arrested and then released under investigation following the assault – all three were known to children’s services.

On April 3 2022, an underage drinker got into a fight with another man and was injured after he was hit in the face. The previous day, a mother reported that two underage children had gained entry to the club and were drinking.

However, these are not the only incidents and Cleveland Police released a ten-page list of reports it has received about the club.
