Drone images have revealed the extent of the void that has been left by the demolition of a Darlington pub.

The Grey Horse pub on Neasham Road was turned to rubble and Northern Echo Camera Club member Neil Sturgeon captured drone images of what has been left behind.

The images, taken on Friday, will undoubtedly sadden regular drinkers of The Grey Horse.

With the imminent closure of St John's Church opposite, the area is seeing a lot of businesses and venues close.

The pub scene in Darlington has seen a shake-up over the last year, with East End Club changing location last June and moving to the building once occupied by The Cricketer’s Hotel.

The old East End Club building, which can be seen next to the remains of the Grey Horse on the drome images, could soon also be gone, as it is also earmarked to be flattened.

The pub isn’t the only popular place to drink that has recently closed, as Hogans on Victoria Road is soon to be demolished.

Hogans is to be flattened to pave the way for an upgraded railway station entrance and car park, while also creating new road layouts, wider pavements, and to increase walking and cycling access.

The redevelopment is part of a wider masterplan for Darlington’s Bank Top station which will create three new platforms to accommodate current services and improve rail connections both within the Tees Valley and beyond via the East Coast Main Line.

Demolition work begn on Monday, January 30, with work due to last until March 24.
