A resident of a County Durham town was left ‘shocked’ after finding a car destroyed after being set on fire on their street.

It happened at around 1.42am yesterday (Monday, January 30) when fire crews responded to reports of a vehicle fire.

Living nearby, resident Andrei Lespezeanu, took pictures of the damage and said that he was “shocked” to find the car.

He said: “I found the car burnt car on my street at 11:00 am this morning, I was shocked that this car was only 200 meters from the front door of my house”.

Mr Lespezeanu added that recovery services came out in the morning to retrieve the car after the damage.

A spokesperson for County Durham and Darlington Fire Service said: “Reports of a vehicle fire in Sherburn Hill came into our control room 1:42am this morning.

"One appliance and the Target Response Vehicle from Durham attended the incident. On arrival our crews extinguished the fire using one hose reel and left the scene at 2:28am."
