A fire at a pizza shop in Darlington this evening led to emergency services rushing to the scene.

Two fire engines were spotted outside MoJo Pizza on Victoria Road, in Darlington, shortly before 6pm this evening (Wednesday, January 18).

A spokesman for County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service said: “We took a call at 17:53pm to a pizza shop on Victoria Road.

“Two fire engines from Darlington Fire Station were mobilised to the scene and were there within three minutes.

“We then used two firefighters who were wearing breathing apparatus to enter the property and they extinguished the fire.

“As far as we’re concerned it was not a protracted incident as both our fire engines left the scene at 18:10pm.

“It was a relatively small fire which involved the grill inside the pizza shop.

“To ensure everyone was okay, we returned to the scene to double-check everything was still okay.”

The fire sparked much conversation on social media and a post on community Facebook group, You Know You’re From Darlo When, garnered 65 comments and 26 shares as of 8:45pm.

The post by Gillian Baker said: “Victoria road at standstill 2 fire engines blocking road as pizza shop on fire.”

Norman Slaughter said: “Hope no one has been injured.”

Zowie Harrison said: “Wow I just been down there an hour ago and they was nothing.”

Durham Police was contacted for comment.
