Darlington residents making their way through the town centre were welcomed with the sight of several incredible ice sculptures this morning.

On High Row, in the Cornmill and Queen Street shopping centres, and other areas around the two centre, residents were able to catch glimpses of beloved sculpted children's chracters, penguins and angel wings.

Many children stared on in awe as their parents snapped photos of them alongside the beautiful frozen artworks, while others even took part in sculpting one.

Adding to this, patrons of Darlington's Market Hall were able to spot popular videogame mascot, Sonic the Hedgehog.

Meanwhile, maps were on offer to guide visitors around the town centre with the attractions spanning from Queen Street to the local Vue.

A speciality Christmas market was running and will be available on Sunday as well (11 December) with gifts and festive treats.

Alongside the icy sculptures, visitors can tour the town to search for more than 70 decorated Christmas trees in the first ever Christmas Tree festival.

Youth and community groups from around the borough joined forces with local retailers to decorate the trees which are on display in shop windows throughout the Christmas period.
