A major parcel delivery company has today confirmed that some customer parcels were being left outside of depots due to backlogs.

In a statement provided to The Northern Echo Evri, a major delivery company, said the cause was due to “capacity issues.”

Reports suggested that parcels were being left outside in the elements at the Stanley depot in County Durham.

Staff at the depot, however, were keen to stress that this was not the case, arguing that the parcels were left outside for 10 minutes and were watched the entire time.

Pictures from the depot show parcel chaos with parcels being gathered for delivery – this is thanks to what Evri confirmed as “volumes driven by the Royal Mail Strikes.”

No parcels were seen being kept outside for long-periods of time and staff assured that all parcels were being kept indoors.

A spokesperson for Evri said: “We can confirm that due to capacity issues following higher than normal parcel volumes driven in part by the Royal Mail Strikes, in some cases our couriers are sorting parcels for delivery outside.

“Whilst this is not ideal, it is a temporary arrangement as our local team works hard to ensure that all parcels will arrive before Christmas. We do have arrangements in place for bad weather.
