A handmade pudding maker favoured by Northern duo The Hairy Bikers is gearing up for another busy Christmas after its desserts were awarded a string of top industry accolades.

Darlington-based Burtree Puddings celebrated double success at the recent Deliciously Yorkshire Taste Awards, not long after one of its most popular desserts, the Golden Syrup Pudding with Syrup Sauce, won A Three Star Gold Award at the Great Taste Awards, dubbed the Oscars of the food world.

It was one of only 242 products to win the coveted three-star mark of excellence, symbolising ‘extraordinary tasty food and drink’, from more than 14,200 entries put through the competition’s rigorous judging process this year.

The prize pudding didn’t disappoint Deliciously Yorkshire’s judges, who named it ‘Best Bakery Product’ among a record number of entries.

The business was also awarded Burtree Puddings’ Lemon Posset the ‘Best Dairy Product’ trophy, describing it as a ‘decadent’ and ‘classy’ dessert.

Lea Darling, who together with husband Robert runs Burtree Puddings from their home on the edge of Darlington, said: “Despite 22 years of selling our handmade puddings and growing a loyal customer base, we never stop putting every effort into each batch to ensure we’re delivering the very best we can.

“We therefore feel so grateful to be awarded such high praise from judges in recognition of the quality of the produce we make at Burtree Puddings, and we are now preparing for a bumper Christmas buoyed by our recent success.”

Last year, Burtree Puddings made its television debut on The Hairy Bikers Go North For Christmas when Dave Myers and Si King paid a visit to try its award-winning Traditional Christmas Pudding.

As a result, sales of its puddings, cakes, treats and sauces have continued to grow, and Robert said they expect to sell more than 7,000 Christmas puddings this year.

He added: “Welcoming the Hairy Bikers to Burtree was such an honour – they both value a high-quality, homemade pudding and we knew our family recipe, with brandy and Newcastle Brown Ale, wouldn’t disappoint!

“It really helped put Burtree Puddings on the map, and make us a popular choice among those wanting tasty, restaurant-quality puddings made with as many British and locally-sourced ingredients as possible.”

Burtree Puddings sells a range of nine sticky puddings, three Christmas puddings, two chilled dessert pots, four flapjacks and various cakes on its website, through a national network of retailers and at food fairs across the UK. It uses cream from the neighbouring Acorn Diary, in Darlington, and local, free range eggs.

Its Gluten Free Christmas pudding was also a finalist in the ‘Best Free From’ category of the Deliciously Yorkshire Taste Awards, held at the Pavilions of Harrogate earlier this month (November 9).
