Passengers using trains through Saltburn faced major disruption on Thursday (September 22) morning when a signalling problem caused delays and cancellations.

Trains running between Hexham, Newcastle, Bishop Auckland, Darlington and Nunthorpe were all affected by the fault which developed shortly before 7am.

National Rail confirmed that a fault with the signalling system at Saltburn meant trains were unable to run to and from the station.

The disruption is still ongoing despite lines reopening and delays are expected to continue into the afternoon, until 1pm.

In a statement Northern Rail confirmed: "Train services are now able to run between Redcar Central and Saltburn in both directions."

Replacement taxi services were called in to service the stations affected.

It came after a host of LNER trains were cancelled on Thursday morning including trains through Newcastle, Durham and Darlington, due to staff shortages.

There will be more disruption on the rail network in the coming weeks as drivers at 12 companies are to strike on Saturday 1 October and Wednesday 5 October, affecting Northern and LNER services.
