Durham University among those due to close for Queen

Here are the Northern universities that will be impacted by planned closures on the extraordinary public holiday: 

Durham University 

Newcastle University

Northumbria University Newcastle

Teesside University 

The University of York

As the Government have stated that there is no obligation to cancel or postpone events during the national period of mourning, the decision to close on the state funeral bank holiday is made separately by individual universities, so the plans in place may differ from institution to institution.

Below are the details of each university's closure plans: 

On their social media pages, Newcastle University issued a statement saying: "As a mark of respect the University will be significantly reducing all activities on campus on Monday 19 September". 

Newcastle University has advised that there will still be key services open, including: 

Philip Robinson Library (open 9:00 - 17:00).

Walton Library (9:00 to 17:00).

King's Gate Building (open for urgent student support issues only). 

The Chicken Shack (11:00 to 14:30). 

In an email to students and staff, Durham University confirmed that their sites would be closed on Monday, with all teaching postponed (unless otherwise advised), though services critical to the business will continue to operate.

In addition to this, many of Durham's colleges have rescheduled training for Freshers' Representative Committee members, though they have also been given the option to voluntarily help with Freshers' week preparations whilst the funeral is shown.

Northumbria University Newcastle took to social media to tell students that events due to be held on Monday were being rescheduled, including plans for Freshers' week. 

In a comment to the Nothern Echo, a spokesperson for Northumbria University said: “As a mark of respect we have rescheduled events and most teaching activities which were due to be held on Monday 19 September.

"These will all be held later in the week. It is important, however, that we provide a supportive experience for new or returning students who may be on campus on Monday.

"Our Ask4Help service at Student Central and City Campus Library, and our IT Helpline will be open. Our Students’ Union will be open for students to watch the State Funeral, should they wish, and some of our catering outlets will be open too.”

Teesside University advised that they will close for the day, though some core services will be available to "support the arrival of new students for the start of the academic year". 

Teesside University's library will remain open, but any appointments will be rescheduled. 

Via their website, the University of York stated that they would be operating their normal public holiday procedures, with staff not required to work unless they are essential to "maintain the University's core activities", such as postgraduate arrivals.
