Police have launched investigations after a teenager was reportedly raped and three youngsters had their phones stolen after a gathering in a Northumberland Park.

Officers from Northumbria Police were called to Gallagher Park in Bedlington Northumberland on Wednesday (August 31) evening after reports of a disorder following a large unofficial gathering which was advertised on social media.

An investigation has now been launched after a teenage girl reported being raped following the gathering, with police now appealing for information.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: “Overnight on Wednesday, officers received multiple reports of disorder in the Gallagher Park area in Bedlington, following an unofficial large gathering.

“A teenager has subsequently reported she had been raped.

“An investigation has been launched by detectives from the Force’s Safeguarding Department and the victim is currently being supported by specially-trained officers.

“Extensive enquiries have been ongoing since the report was made and additional patrols have been carried out in the area.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact police via the online reporting tool on our website, by calling 101, or alternatively you can report a crime or suspicious activity to us using the Tell Us Something page on our website.”

It comes after speculation on social media that other offences including an acid attack may have taken place, but police have now quashed the rumours confirming that this did not happen.

Police also arrested a 14-year-old male in connection with the robberies of three teens’ mobile phones, with the teen due to appear at court today.

A police statement added: “Meanwhile, in attendance at the event, officers were made aware three teenagers had been approached and had their mobile phones stolen.

“A number of enquiries were carried out and officers later made an arrest in Kenton in connection with the robberies.

“A 14-year-old male was arrested and charged in connection with the robberies and is due to appear at court today.”
