A dog show in North Yorkshire has been forced to cancel due to the extreme hot weather set to sweep across the region this weekend and early next week.

Saving Yorkshire’s Dogs Summer Show, a major fundraiser for the rescue service, has cancelled its weekend event on Sunday July 17.

The independent dog rescue service said the cancellation was due to “expected high temperatures.”

Adding that the “health and welfare of dogs and their owners is more important than raising funds.”

Donations have been welcomed by the service, asking those who may have attended and donated to instead donate to their JustGiving page.

An announcement post on their Facebook was met with support with many saying the move was a “sensible decision.”

One person said: “I hope other dog shows are postponed too if this weather carries on.

“Always baffles me that dog shows are in the summer when the poor dogs can’t cope with the heat.”

Another person added: “Well done for putting the dogs welfare first. Maybe those who were going to come could send a donation instead.

With someone else adding: “Definitely agree with you – thank you for putting the dogs welfare first.”

The North East is not being spared the extreme heat that is set to sweep across the nation this weekend and early next week.

The warning for much of the North East is in place from all day Monday and Tuesday, with hot spells likely to develop from Sunday.

Adverse health effects are part of the warning, with population-wide health effects also likely such as sunburn or heat exhaustion and other heat-related illnesses.

There is also an increased chance that some heat-sensitive systems and equipment may fail, potentially leading to localised power cuts and the loss of services to some homes and businesses.
