A primary school in Darlington has released a statement to parents asking them to make sure children bring sun hats with them, otherwise, they will not be allowed out to play as temperatures soar across the region.

In an announcement on Facebook, Red Hall Primary School said that advice had come from the local authority after the extreme heat warning issued by the Met Office.

Children have been asked to come to school with a sun hat “every day” after the school stressed that the number of children not wearing a sun hat “is a real concern after we have reminded you.”

The school argued that if they do not bring a sun hat with them, “we can not let them play out over lunchtime when the sun is at its peak on these hot days.”

Red Hall Primary school also asked parents to bring sun cream before school.

It added: “Send them with some in their bags. We give them chance to re-apply if they need to. Remember water bottles.”

PE kits, school dresses, school t-shirts and black shorts have also been encouraged by the school “while the weather is hot.”

The statement added: “We really need you all to help us out here please.”

The news comes after an Amber warning for extreme heat has been issued from Sunday to Tuesday.

Widespread impacts on people and infrastructure are expected, along with “population-wide adverse health effects."

The warning for extreme heat has been issued for much of Southern England but also reaches up to Teesside and parts of the North East while covering all of North Yorkshire.

Today, the weather forecaster has extended the amber warning into Tuesday, as the UK is set to see three days of extreme, record-breaking heat.
