Three people have been taken to hospital this afternoon after a police car crashed with a motorbike while responding to an incident, leaving the A1 exit slip road closed.

Emergency services are still at the scene of the incident that was first reported at 2.15pm on the A1 exit slip road onto Dunston Road near the MetroCentre.

The road was closed from the A1 Western Bypass Southbound from J71 to J70 Park Terrace.

The Northern Echo:

Police later confirmed that a police car crashed with a motorbike while responding to another emergency call-out.

Two people on the motorbike were taken to hospital with serious injuries and the police officer was also taken to hospital as a precaution.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: “The road is closed as well as the northbound and southbound A1 slip roads as enquiries are carried out into the collision.

“As is standard practice in such circumstances, the collision has been referred to the Independent Officer for Police Conduct.
