The owners of a popular County Durham pub have announced their decision to step down from running the venue in an emotional statement shared on social media.

The Royal George Tavern, in Shildon, has become a well-known community hub over the years – with many calling it their local and building a connection with its owners.

However, after four years at the helm, its current owners, ‘Shuggie and Polly’ announced on Wednesday (July 6) that they would be leaving the venue in favour of a new start at a pub “closer to family”.

From July 15, the owners of The Royal George will be departing, but it’s not yet known whether there is anyone lined up to run the pub following the departure.

Taking to social media on Wednesday, The Royal George page thanked loyal customers in an emotional post, which read: “Bittersweet announcement – after four wonderful years at The Royal George, it’s now time to say goodbye as we have been offered the opportunity to relocate to take on new pub closer to family.

“We want to thank all our loyal customers and friends for the love warmth and support they have given us over the years, and we will look forward to coming back in the future as customers, and it goes without saying that you all will be very welcome to come and visit us at our new pub.

“For now, if you would like to say goodbye and wish us luck in our new venture, we will be having a leaving party on Friday 15 from 7pm.”

We've approached the pub for comment.
