Durham County Council has announced the long list of roads that will be closed during the city’s Miners’ Gala which will be taking place on Saturday (July 9) as the historic location gets ready to host the event for the first time since the pandemic.

On Saturday, crowds of thousands are expected to line the streets of Durham to welcome mining groups, bands and a procession that promises to be “the world's biggest and most colourful celebrations of trade union and community spirit”.

The main centrepieces for the event include a march across the city, which will feature banners and signs galore, along with speeches that are done at the racecourse in Durham.

In the 136th installment of the Miners’ Gala, this will be the first time in two years that Durham Miners’ Association has been able to stage such an event for members of the public.

To allow the Gala to take place, Durham County Council has revealed all the streets that will be blocked off for the majority of Saturday to allow everyone present to have a good time.

Alongside the closed routes, the county council has warned that anyone who breaks the road closure notices face a ‘level three’ fine.
