Police raced to the scene of four reports of domestic abuse in County Durham and arrested four men – all in one morning.

In the early hours of this morning (July 7), Durham Police received 999 calls reporting four women across the south area being subject to domestic abuse.

A Durham Police spokesperson and : “Three of them had the courage to make that 999 call themselves and a witness made fourth, concerned for what they were seeing.

“Response officers raced to the scene of each one to safeguard those victims. Four men suspected of committing the abuse were arrested.

“They were taken into custody on suspicion of ABH, GBH and common assault where investigations have begun into each from Response, Safeguarding and the Prisoner Handler Team despite one of the women not supporting police action.”

The spokesperson added: “We wish we could say this was uncommon. It is not.

"But it won’t stop us doing everything we can to intervene, safeguard and prosecute.

“Domestic abuse isn't always physical. It can happen to men or women and takes many forms - psychological, physical, sexual, financial and emotional."
