Police have confirmed that a person sadly died on train tracks at Salters Lane in Darlington in the early hours of this morning (Friday, July 8).

All rail services between Darlington and Newcastle have been affected by the incident.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said an investigation has been launched.

He said: "Officers were called to the line in Darlington at 2am following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Officers are currently working to identify the person and establish the full circumstances behind their death."

A spokesperson for North East Ambulance Service confirmed that they were called to the incident at 2.03am this morning.

They sent two vehicles from the Hazardous Area Response Team, a duty officer, clinical team leader and two double crewed ambulances.

A spokesman for LNER said: "It is with sadness that due to a person being hit by a train, some services are cancelled, altered, or delayed."

The disruption to train services is expected to last until 2pm today.
